KAIROS time project

year 2008

Kairos

Kairos is an ancient Greek word meaning "the right or opportune moment" or " the God's time". The ancient Greeks had two words for time, chronos and kairos.
While the former refers to chronological or sequential time, the latter signifies a time in between, a moment of undetermined period of time in which something special happens. While chronos is quantitative, kairos has a qualitative nature.

The term "kairos" is used in theology to describe the qualitative form of time. In the New Testament kairos means "the appointed time in the purpose of God", the time when God acts. It differs from the more usual word for time which is chronos.
I intend "Kairos" as the time in which Changing is possible.
The work I propose is a "unreliable" Network Time Protocol server.

Time is critical for transactions across computer networks. Many events on the network need accurate time to initiate and control processes, and complete transactions such as authentication. Accurate time for time stamps and log files is also very important for billing systems, network diagnostics, digital forensics, highreliability databases and process analysis. Yet clocks in electronic devices are not designed for accuracy. A typical clock can drift more than one hour in a year. The solution is to employ network time synchronization that occurs between servers and clients via network time protocol (NTP). A master time source known as an NTP time server is intended to synchronize a network. Unwittingly, we adopt the time provided by "someone else" who is "somewhere else". In the virtual netbased life He intends to personify Kronos and Kairos at the same time.

This work wants to recover Kairos, this hack of the NTP server stoles the time from God’s hands; date and hour stamped on PCs can became different from the universal one to create new possibilities, different situations, messes to make netlife nearer to the Reality, to explore the path of possibility.

In the Real life the synchronization is not perfect, our watchs are different and sometimes stop working properly without correction, this makes some events to happen by chance, and sometimes these events can change our life. And this is what makes Life more interesting and brighter... we are women and men not binary acting machines.
Changing Time during the connection on the Net opens new windows to possibilities.

My Kairos server breaks the golden rule of the NTP creators: it uses a fake algorithm to set incorrect Time slowly and constantly and spread it. It is obviously intended only for private networks because changing Time is consider “illegal” and this artistic project can be made just “privately” as a funny joke that could invite people to think different.
The “illegal” state of this NTP server forces me not to render publicly available my work, but obviously one is free to use it under its own responsibility.
